UNTANGLING THE MYTH ABOUT THE RASHTRIYA SWAYAMSEVAK SANGH (RSS) Someone has said it very precisely “Before you assume, learn the fact and before you judge understand why”. Currently, RSS is popularly known as an Indian right wing and a Hindu nationalist organisation. The word “Right wing” and “Hindu Nationalist” itself evokes extreme reactions from different societies and organizations, not only in India but also across the world. On top of that Leftists has politically popularly prejudiced ill-founded critiques against the RSS in their writings, resulting in mistrust of people for the RSS. This aggression towards the RSS is not due to the actual acts of enlightenment and indiscretion, but rather it is because of envy and fear. I felt that it is high time to depict the real footing of the RSS. In the current article, I am describing the RSS in general for an ordinary individual. However, I will deal in details the past and current work of the RSS in articles in coming months that will not only open a window to the world about the RSS but will also demystify the current myth about RSS. The RSS or simplistically called as “Sangh” runs on the basis of good personal relations and teamwork. The key to RSS management is based on the principle of no rigid grading of posts, autonomous in its form and collaborative in spirit. The RSS has played an important role in the social, religious and economic life of India since its founding. Its attraction to Indians is based on its patriotism and nationalistic attitude. The RSS has always had a healthy relationship with members of all communities and faiths. This is predominantly because the RSS definition of Hindu is not linked to any religion but to a national identity of India, which makes it unique and incomparable. Also, the RSS belief is simple and clear with the main aim to be virtuous and manifest that goodness into the society, through actions that will benefit others. This is the reason why the RSS has expanded exponentially and become an organization for ordinary simplistic common individuals. It gives them the confidence that they, the ordinary woman or man, can bring about changes in society and the country irrespective of what cast, creed, colour, race and family they belong to. The RSS does not promote unsociable standards where only specialists can comprehend, but it addresses the common concerns and necessary values that are within the understanding of the majority. Based on these principles, RSS outshines other organisations and is being trusted and exists. Individuals who work for the RSS are popularly known as “pracharaks” and/or “swayamsevaks”. No advertisements are required for an individual to be a part of the RSS. The methodology that RSS uses is to create a sense of belonging within individuals and to connect people within the society. The importance of each individual is acknowledged. The selfless noticeable work by an ordinary “pracharak” brings infinite joy to a common man, which is one of the biggest reasons why people like to be affiliated with and stay on as comrades for the course of their lives with the RSS. This open format also encourages people with different orientations and from all walks of life to embrace the RSS. Although devotional service to the motherland is its core, however, RSS covers all dimensions of humanity, politics, economy, governance, issues of language, religion, social uplift—all are equal in importance. The RSS considers society to be the main instrument of change. It believes that only with the complete involvement of society can social change happen. Change (“Parivartan”) in thinking of an individual and the society to uplift the country permeates the RSS works, which makes it a forward-looking, futuristic organization. The RSS believes in the philosophy of “vyakti parivartan-samaj parivartan-samagra parivartan” this means that if there is a positive change in an individual thinking, it will bring change in society, which will further bring complete or holistic change in the world. The remarkable outstanding RSS discipline ensures that this diverse formation works and moves together. Parents want their children to attend “Shakhas” for the inculcation of life’s values. Shakha activities are designed to help an individual develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Every nationalist, although is driven by the desire to do something for the society and the country, do not always find the right platform. The RSS provide many platforms, in which each person can find their own fit without leaving their professions or status quo in life. Due to this flexibility, the RSS has opened the doors to many individuals and motivated them to undertake efforts to bring tangible change in the society without getting into politics. All RSS roadmaps follow the basic premise of building on India’s strengths and rectifying her weaknesses. Hence, the projects run by the RSS including, but not limited, to the poverty alleviation, social harmony, equality and unity, women’s empowerment, history writing, education, culture, security and preservation of cultural values are important and needs to be elaborated to decipher the real truth behind the RSS.
